Saturday - December 31, 2011

The last day of 2011 is here and it has been a very good year for Sway.  He has accomplished a lot this year.  It is amazing to see how much focused practice he has put in.  The use of this blog has really helped his development.

Here are our goals for 2012:

Transition to be a true Switch Hitter - January 20% of our hitting work will be left handed

Become a more mechanically correct pitcher - Sway will be attending pitching lessons 1 time a week with Chris Nyguard.  I am VERY excited about his potential due to having such a talented pitching coach working for me.

Functional Training with Zack Lush at least 1 time a week.  With the start up of my second location in Viera and Zack Lush (Delucas Training) moving in next door to me opens up an incredible opportunity for not only my son but all the other players who train with me.  I am super excited for Sway to start on the functional strength training element of his game.  He is really excited for this opportunity as well.

Lose the fear of Blocking in games.  Sway has done a great job in drills blocking but has a fear to do it in the games.  Physically he is capable of it but we need to get over the mental fear.  Our goal is to become a very solid blocking catcher this year.

Sway's Goal - Hit his first ball out.  He has come very close a few times this year and I am confident he will achieve this goal this year.  I rather him hit hard line drives back side each at bat, but he wanted this as one of his goals HA HA...

Saturday - November 26, 2011 (Outdoor Workout - Crane Softball Field)

Sway & Dario worked out together again today for the 3rd day in a row.

BP
Approx 250 Balls live BP.

Note: I was throwing from 40' and about 45 - 50MPH.

Mario Garza came out to field and threw another 50 Balls to each of them.  He was throwing a lot harder and it was a great test for both boys.

One of the things he noticed was how each of them looked on their TAKES.  We need to work hard on following the ball back on takes and also not letting our hands drop to the level of the ball.  The challenge from Mario was for the boys to work on it the next couple of weeks and do a similar workout in 2 weeks from today.

Goal - Start having Sway & Dario TAKE 20 Pitches each round of BP and get into a great power position.

Sway hit the ball very well today.  A lot of power the other way.  There was about 10 balls hit into wind that one or two hopped the fence which is 190'.

NOTE:  This was the best round of BP, Flips, & Tee work I have ever seen him do to date.  He hit the ball with such authority and was staying inside of everything.  I was trying to work middle to middle away in the zone and he was consitently driving the ball hard the other way on low line drives.    When I would challenge him inside he was turning on those pitches, but still keeping his hands inside and not getting long.  There were very few mistakes in BP.  Good Plate discipline to not chasing balls out of the zone!  All the Hard work is really starting to show.  Very proud of him...

Note - Blocking is something that Sway is very good at in practice, but he is not taking it into games.  After CV talking with him it is due to him being a little scared to do it during games.  This is completely natural for an 8 year old and we are both working on making him more confident to trust his equipment.  It will come especially with the amout of work he puts into it.  Receiving, footwork, and arm are very advanced for his age.  Blocking is our next challenge!

Saturday - September 17th, 2011 (Mario Garza Catching Clinic)

    Pre Camp work
    20 High Tee
    60 Working Down

    Catching Clinic from 11-2
    • Recieving work
    • Exchance Work - Made out front
    • Blocking Work
    • Proper Footwork - Cheat with left knee, Jab step with right foot, stay low and explode
I learned a TON of stuff today from Mario.  He was able to break catching down into its finest details which is something all the kids will one day appreciate if they work the drills they were taught.

    Post Camp Workout
Sway and I went to Eat @ Wendys and I was impressed with all the things he had questions about for Mario.

    Went back to Academy and:
     Tee Work
    20 High
    60 Middle and Low
(Emphesis on keeping Head perfectly still)  I told him I will give him $20.00 if he can remember to work on that the entire week without me having to keep reminding him.  Lets see what happends

    Front Flips
80 Balls half away driving them away, half middle still staying inside driving them other way.

We took a break after camp and hitting then Sway wanted to workout outside.  I was so proud when I was cutting the grass and he came outside and begged me to throw with him.

    Throwing
10 Min of from 60' - 90'  Arm looked Live today.  We worked 3 grips while throwing (4 seam, 2 seam, Circle)

Accuracy Game from 90' (have to hit the guy in chest)
    Sway wins 10-7

30 Pitch Bullpen - Worked 3 pitches.  Starting to develop a 2 seam.  When he throws it right its is suprizingly nasty.  We NEED to work this more!

    Catching

As prep for tomorrow's catching camp on field - Sway asked we do our throw to bases workout.

    2nd Base x 25
    3rd Base x 15
    1st Base x 15

    Bunts - Throwing directly to 2nd x 10
    Bunts - First x 10

He was VERY ACCURATE on all but the Bunt coverages to first.

    Watched Video
We watched a special Video from one of the best hitters in the world.  It had some amazing things in the video!

Overall today was a special day for both me and Sway.  Looking foward to a great day tomorrow!

Pitched a complete game win.  Only walked 1 person.  I was impressed with his performance on the mound against a good hitting team!
